Teaching Geography

Choose one or more books from this page to read aloud to your children throughout the school year. Please do not attempt to read every book listed on this page. Remember that there are four cycles, and that, eventually, you will come back around to this cycle, and at that time you can choose other books (or, you may choose to re-read some favorites!).
If you have a child who is able to read independently, choose a book from this page and print the reading schedule for your child’s binder of independent work.

National Geographic Student Atlas
This is a good basic atlas, with some details about each state and country. It is not as detailed and interesting for young children as many of the other books on this list.
This resource is scheduled for all four cycles.
The only readings scheduled in this book for Cycle 3 are the “North America” pages, about fifteen pages. They could be studied throughout the school year.

National Geographic Kids Ultimate U.S. Road Trip Atlas
This book will only be used during Cycle 3 because it is focused on the United States. The pages of this book feel like paper, which is different from the typical glossy pages that are found in National Geographic books. Each state has a two page spread, with a map, a couple of photos, some graphics, and several details about things to see in the state. There are puzzles and quizzes in the back of the book.
There are readings scheduled in this book for thirteen of the twenty-eight weeks.

National Geographic Kids United States Atlas
This book has full two-page spreads for each state, with a topographical map of each state, as well as photos, basic facts (population, land area, etc.) and a paragraph or more of details. This book is only used in Cycle 3, and for three terms (terms 2, 3, and 4).
There are readings scheduled in this book for nineteen of the twenty-eight weeks.
- Amazon paperback

The Usborne Geography Encyclopedia Complete Wold Atlas
This book has colorful photos and long descriptions about each location. It is best suited for children in Forms 2 and up due to the amount of details. Note that there is information about “Climate Change” in this book that you may wish to skip.
This resource is scheduled for all four cycles.
There are readings scheduled in this book for seven of the twenty-eight weeks.
- Amazon paperback

Window on the World by Molly Wall and Jason Mandryk
This is a wonderful resource, and I highly recommend owning a copy and going through it with your children. It is mostly used in cycles 1, 2 and 4, and is only scheduled two times in Cycle 3.
