Jesse Tree Day 11

December 11

The symbol for this day is a slingshot. Ours was made with a broken tree branch and string.

You have probably heard the Christmas song that goes like this:

“For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

and his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

That was a prophecy about Jesus, way back in Isaiah 9:6. When Isaiah said that the government would be upon Jesus’ shoulder, he meant that Jesus Christ would be the King.

Remember when we learned that Matthew 1:1 shows Jesus Christ as the final son of Abraham? It also shows Jesus as the final son of David, and therefore the king over Israel:

“The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

We can learn more about Jesus being king in the following passages:

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:32-33

And

“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ” Acts 2:29-31

The New Testament never speaks of an earthly Israel as having covenant significance. The members of Israel are only those who have faith in Christ, not blood descendants. (See Rom 2:28-29, 4:11-12, 9:6-8, 11:17-24 (one covenant people in Christ: believers–unbelievers are broken off), Gal 3:7-9, 28-29, Eph 2:12 & 19, Phil 3:3, 1 Pet 2:9-10).

Jesus Christ is king over this spiritual Israel, the Israel of God. (Galatians 6:16) And, He is the ultimate King! Revelation 19:16 says:

“On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”
