Homemade Fabric Softener Recipe

This is so easy, I almost feel guilty writing a whole post about it. And yet, I wonder why I didn’t do this years ago!? 🙂 I love scented things. I love perfumes, and smelly candles, and fabric softener. Dryer sheets could go anywhere, in my opinion, to freshen up any space. But there is one issue that I have with so many of these products: chemicals. I don’t want to be breathing junk or have my kids breathing junk. I don’t want to be exposing my family to toxins just so that everything can smell nice. This is why I wanted to make my own fabric softener.

At first, I was skeptical about the vinegar. Vinegar? Vinegar does not smell nice, at all. I know my scents, and vinegar is not one of my favorites! But vinegar DOES make laundry smell fresh–and you don’t smell vinegar on the clothing at all. I’ve added Lavender and Cypress essential oils. I have also made this with Rosemary instead of Cypress. Both have a nice, clean, fresh smell to them. I found this bottle at the grocery store, and I like it because it has a cap that I can pour the fabric softener into to measure. One side note: some people suggest putting essential oil concoctions in glass, because eo’s can “eat” the plastic. I am not sure if that’s really a concern with a recipe that is mostly vinegar. If you are worried about this, make your fabric softener in a glass jar and use a lid that is easy to pour from.
