Drinking too much water: My Story

One time I drank too much water. Let me explain. ๐Ÿ™‚

I was pregnant, and I was heading in to the doctor’s office for an ultrasound–the ultrasound, you know, the big one.

I had been told to make sure to drink 4 8 oz glasses of water before my appointment. I mentioned in this post that I don’t naturally crave a lot of water. This task seemed next to impossible to me. But I wanted to see my baby, so I did it.

My bladder was SO full.

On the way to the doctor’s office, it seemed like there was construction everywhere, and roads were bumpy. It seemed to take an hour longer than usual to get to the office (ok, exaggerating, but you know what I mean!). I wasย in pain.

When I got there, I had to sit in the waiting room for a long time. There was one of those water dispensers, and people kept filling up their cups to drink. There was a fish tank.

A fish tank.

Seriously, try to hold a very full bladder when there’s a fish tank right by you. Agony, I tell ya!

So I went back in to the ultrasound room, and the technician told me:

“Your bladder isย too full.”

Yeah, lady, you’re tellin’ me! What she said next, though?

“Go to the bathroom and fill this cup 5 times and dump it out. Then come back in here.”

Right. 5 little dixie cups of pee, and then STOP? Uh huh!

But, I wanted to see my baby. Where there is a will, there is a way. I filled up 5 cups and then I stopped my pee.

When I got back into the room, she said it was still too full, but it would have to do. It was still hurting quite a bit.ย She laughed, and asked,

“how much water did you drink?”

I saw my ultrasound, which was lovely, and then got all of that urine out before the bumpy ride home.

As soon as I got home, I decided to measure my glasses. Try this at home–really. When you fill up one of your glasses,ย how much water is in it?ย ‘Cuz a full glass, in my home, anyways, ain’t 8 ounces. Nope. It’s more like 12 to 16, depending on the glass. I drank FOUR full glasses before that ultrasound. 64 ounces. That’s a lot of water. That’s more than Dr. Natasha says to drink in a day.

Moral of the story?

Check your glasses. Fill up a measuring cup (1 cup = 8 oz) and dump it into your glass, and see how many ounces you drink when you drink “8 glasses per day.” ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. So i read your other post before this one. I kinda knew you had to drink quite a bit of water a day but didn’t really know how much exactly, although i have heard the usual “8 glasses a day” advice. I drink about 1.5 litres and from what you mentioned then that is spot on, i will carry on as i am.

I feel your pain too Brenda, full bladders and long journeys never go hand in hand ๐Ÿ™‚
