Introducing the Jesse Tree

(Our family’s advent tradition)

Since it’s almost December, I want to share about our family’s tradition of reading through the Jesse Tree verses every year. Many years ago, our kids and I made homemade ornaments, and we keep them in a special box and pull them out, one-by-one. We are pretty bad about getting through all twenty-five days (full disclosure), because the month of December gets busy. Still, this has been a great tradition for our family, and it points us to Jesus, the Savior, the Messiah, the child who came to earth as God-in-the-flesh, to die for our sins. It helps us keep the reason we celebrate fresh in our minds.

The current book we use is:
The Advent Jesse Tree by Dean Meador Lambert

We’ve also gone through the verses on various websites, and in the past, we used two different resources that were similar to the Jesse Tree:
Unwrapping the Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp
and
Adornaments from Family Life

Each day consists of going through a reading, and then we hang that day’s ornament on the tree.

This year, I have a goal of getting through all twenty-five days, and posting about those days right here. Each day of December, I’m going to share some of the Scripture for the Jesse Tree, a photo of our hand-made ornament, and some thoughts about that day’s passages. I’m going to try to post the days a day or two in advance.

When you see my posts, my hope is that you will pull out your Bible and read the verses to your kids. And maybe you’ll also want to get a little crafty and make some ornaments with your family.

I look forward to sharing this series with you!
