Family Read Aloud Books or Independent Reading: Food Science

Choose one or more books from this list if you would like to study food science with your children this year. You may want to use a cookbook (like the one listed below) in order to try food experiments at home (aka–cooking!).
Form 2+ (or whole family read aloud)

National Geographic Kids Edible Science by Carol Tennant (lined up with On Food and Cooking)
This book was made for kids, and it contains bright colors and fun experiments. I have lined up with On Food and Cooking so that you can read details about food chemistry as you go through the experiments in this book. This book is scheduled at a pace of one or two experiments per week, though one week (Week 19) has four experiments that happened to fit perfectly with the topics in On Food and Cooking. There are experiments scheduled for twenty-one out of twenty-eight weeks.

Form 3+ (or whole family read aloud)

Food Anatomy by Julia Rothman and Rachel Wharton (in order)
This is a beautifully sketched book full of all kinds of foods, with details about those foods. One of Rachel Wharton’s “Anatomy” books is scheduled in each of the cycles. Note that this book is read in order instead of being lined up with On Food and Cooking like the other books on this list. This book is scheduled at a pace of about eight pages per week.

Culinary Reactions by Simon Quellen Field (lined up with On Food and Cooking)
This fun book describes the chemical reactions between foods. I have scheduled the readings to line up with the topics in On Food and Cooking. You may also choose to read this book cover-to-cover, though I have not created a schedule for that. This book is scheduled at a pace of two to ten pages per week, for nineteen out of twenty-eight weeks in this cycle. There is only one reading in Term 2, because the book simply does not contain some of the topics that are in On Food and Cooking.

On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen by Harold McGee
This is a great book! It explains the science of cooking, and it is scheduled at a pace of approximately thirty pages per week. I have scheduled other books on this list to line up with the topics covered, week by week, in this book.
