STAR Cycle 2 Book List (Choose Your Own Adventure Homeschooling!)

I can’t express how excited I am about the STAR Family Guides! I have dreamed up this kind of curriculum for a long time, and now I am finally making it happen. Did you ever read Choose Your Own Adventure books? Think of this like a Choose Your Own Adventure homeschool curriculum! You tell me what you want in your Family Guide, and I will make a customized guide for you.

This Saturday, STAR mamas are coming over to my house to look through many of the books that they can choose to have scheduled in their Family Guide this year. As I planned for this event, I thought that making a printed list of the optional books would be a good idea.

The following information can also be found on this Printable STAR Cycle 2 Booklist. If you are a part of STAR Homeschool Community, you may want to bring this or click on links and decide which materials will work best for your family.

If you are not a part of STAR Homeschool Community but you want to join, make sure to apply today. Some of our classes are nearly full for the 2022-2023 school year.

A NOTE ABOUT THE STAR CUSTOM FAMILY GUIDE

Typically, when you purchase a curriculum, you don’t get any say in what materials are included in the reading schedule. Every curriculum I have seen is “as is” and if you prefer another title, you will have to write in your choices. Also, if you would rather not read the volume of material that is assigned, you will likely need to cross out those titles, lest you feel guilt for “skipping” them.

STAR Families will be reading the Bible together (so make sure you have a good Bible!), reading a chapter book all at the same time, studying the same period of history (using whichever materials each family prefers) and doing memory work together (this is optional but recommended–students will practice memory work every week on community day).

Note that this Family Guide is for family read aloud and reading assignments for students in 6th grade and under. I will be writing a post very soon with a book list of independent reading books for students in 7th through 12th grade. I encourage moms to read aloud to their students of all ages, and to do as many family activities as possible all together. This can be in the morning, afternoon or evening–whatever works best for your family. Then, at some point in the day, allow time for your 7th-12th grade student to do some independent reading, science, math and writing.

I really want this year’s homeschool experience to bless your family! Choose whichever resources you like on the following pages. Make sure to look at the number of readings per week for each resource, and decide if that will work for your family.

If you do not want direction in a particular subject, simply write a large “X” over that subject.

Please don’t overwhelm yourself! There are so many great resources to choose from, but please do not choose so many that you will feel stress every time you look at your Custom Family Guide. Make this work for your family.

A NOTE ABOUT WHERE TO PURCHASE ITEMS

I have listed multiple places to purchase most of the items on these lists. My preference is to support small businesses first, the publishing company second and Amazon last. When possible, you may also get materials from the library (though this is difficult if it is a book you will use regularly throughout our 28 week school year). I have also provided a link for free copies, when available, on Project Gutenberg and the audio version on LibraVox. One of the book stores mentioned is a super cool homeschool bookstore in Oregon, where my family used to live. They have a great online presence and shipping is reasonable. You can also find some pretty great used book deals on the site!

Some of these links are affiliate links. That means that I will make a small percentage off of your sale if you purchase the book, but it will not increase the price for you.

MEMORY WORK

The following materials are scheduled in the guide. This is optional, but highly recommended! Students will be learning this memory work on community day, and it would be great if they practice it at home.

Claritas Publishing Cycle 2 Memory Work GuideClaritas Publishing$45.00

(Optional) And choose one of the following:

Claritas Publishing Cycle 2 Audio CDSClaritas Publishing$30.00
Claritas Publishing Cycle 2 Audio DownloadClaritas Publishing$30.00

Note that Claritas Publishing has other materials available to purchase as well. These line up nicely with the memory work, and are all optional.

CHAPTER BOOKS

These are the chapter books that are scheduled in the guide (you may also find these at the library). Each family who is a part of STAR Homeschool Community will be going through these books together, at a rate of about 1 chapter per day through the school year. Links are to Exodus Books.

  1. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
  2. Gone Away Lake
  3. The Door in the Wall
  4. Pollyanna
  5. Chanticleer and the Fox
  6. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
  7. The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood
  8. My Father’s Dragon
  9. McBroom’s Wonderful One Acre Farm

You may also use audio versions of these books if they are available. I recommend reading aloud whenever possible, but audio books are a great way to get through a book if your voice is tired from other reading (like history and science and every other subject) or if you are spending time in the car.
